Criminal Justice - Assignment Example Most juvenile crimes result from the fact that they have not lived long enough to appreciate social norms and standards. Juvenile crimes therefore fall in the class of crimes with passion without forethought. They are still in their development stages and therefore may sometimes fail to differentia between right and wrong actions and as such commit criminal offences with little thought or understanding of probable consequences. As a result of their ongoing biological development, minors are unstable emotionally. Just slight provocations could therefore trigger emotions and causing them to react in violent manners. There is therefore lack of premeditation in most juvenile crimes and this justifies their preferential treatment by courts (Bonnie, Johnson, Chemers and Shuck, 2007). At the age of 16 and below, juveniles are still receiving parental care and therefore parents take responsibility for all their actions. Parents/guardians are charged with the responsibility of upbringing their children, availing healthy environment and instilling desirable values among the kids. The blame for juvenile crime should thus be shouldered by parents while the young ones receive preferential court treatment. This is because some juvenile crimes may be the result of circumstances such as being subjected to unsafe environment. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a poem written during the medieval period about the Arthurian legend. Although the author is anonymous, it is apparent that "the dialect of Sir Gawain points to an origin in provincial England, and it represents the cultural centers which remote from the royal court at London where Geoffrey Chaucer spent his life" (Norton, 200). This poem is considered one of the best works of Middle English literature. One reason is that the author was able to ingeniously combine two different plots, folklore and romance, into one literary work. The other reason is the author’s elaborate, but brilliant usage of alliterations and rhymes. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is about a Green Knight, a figure that many consider to be an immortal, who challenges Arthur’s court. Sir Gawain, the most courageous and noble knight of the court, accepts the Green Knight’s challenge for the sake of King Arthur’s reputation. Believing that he is acting on behalf of the king, Sir Gawain does not know that it is really a test of his own chivalry. The following passage that I will analyze introduces and describes the Green Knight. Here, I will talk about the importance of the knight’s attitude, size, and his greenish color. All these are significant elements, as you will see, that help to demonstrate his condemnation of the court. The author begins by telling us how the Green Knight breaks into the dining hall as everyone is about to be served their main course, "there hurtles in at the hall-door an unknown rider" (Norton, 205). Dulce et Decorum Est Wilfred Owen’s poem is settled in the battlefield of World War I. It features a group of soldiers who seem to be returning to camp after a long day at war. Some of these men had lost their boots and other articles of clothing. When all of a sudden gas shells drop near them and they all went to put on their gas masks in fear of dying from the gas. The narrator thought everyone had got their masks on, but then he still heard one of his friends yelling and screaming in agony. He watched a member of his crew die from these gas shells and he could do nothing about it.Then the narrator goes forward in time, sometime after he has returned from war, and he cannot get the image of his friend dying out of his head. He always thinks about that night and he even dreams about his comrade’s deaths. He also speaks of the people coming home that are desperate for glory as the return home from this war. Throughout this poem there are many things about it that allows the poem to be so successful. The word choice that Wilfred Owen chose to use in â€Å"Dulce et Decorum Est,† really set a mood and gave great imagery, which led for the success of the poem.The structure that Wilfred Owen used for â€Å"Dulce et Decorum Est† is another factor that helped the poem become very successful. These aspects of Dulce et Decorum Est really allow Wilfred Owen’s poem to be seen as a very successful poem. Wilfred Owen’s word choice throughout â€Å"Dulce et Decorum Est† set this poem up for success. Wilfred Owen’s superb description in â€Å"Dulce et Decorum Est† allows the reader to get an image in their head that helps them understand the poem even more.Throughout â€Å"Dulce et Decorum Est,† Wilfred Owen shocks the reader with his description of the events that are happening. In the first part of the â€Å"Dulce et Decorum Est†, Owens writes it in the present as all of the action of this event happens and him and his crew are reacting to the gas shells going off around them.In second par of the poem, Owens writes it in the future of the event that. The second part looks back to draw a lesson from what happened at the start. The two fourteen line parts of â€Å"Dulce et Decorum Est† again shows a formal poetic style, but it is a broken and unsettling version of this form.
